The Democratic Alliances (DA) says the appointment of independent review panel to look into Public Protector Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office has been long overdue.

The party has been calling for the axing of the Public Protector saying that she is u fit to hold office alleging that she doesn’t know what she is doing in the office and lacks knowledge of not only her powers but her jurisdiction as well.

Speaker of the National Assembly Mme Thandi Modise made this announcement earlier this week.

The DA said in a statement through their Chief Whip in the National Assembly that they hope that the panel will waste no time in beginning its work as this might be a step closer to holding Mkhwebane to account, despite numerous attempts by her to delay.

“In the interest of accountability and respect of State institutions, the Office of the Public Protector must and should continue to be the vanguard that protects the interests of the vulnerable, something which is a rare sight under Mkhwebane’s leadership.”

The National Assembly Spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said that the panel will not conduct hearings but will make its decision based on the information before it.

“The panel will start its duties on a date to be announced. The panel must determine whether there is prima facie evidence to show that the holder of a public office committed misconduct; is incapacitated; or is incompetent.”

“In so doing, it must provide the holder of a public office with a reasonable opportunity to respond, in writing, to all relevant allegations” he said.
