With a little Iverson a year after being appointed as an acting Public Protector, Adv Kholeka Gcaleka has been officially appointed as the Public Protector of the Republic of South Africa.

The announcement was made by the Presidency on behalf of President Cyril Ramaphosa who said Gcaleka will take over the position effective from November 1st, 2023 on a seven (7) years non-renewable contract.

Her appointment as the Acting Public Protector came after the suspension of Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane in June 2022. The suspension was followed by an inquiry held in Parliament into her fitness to hold office.

The committee later on found against her and recommended that she be dismissed from her post as the Public Protector a month before her contract ended.

Adv Gcaleka’s recommendation by the National Assembly was not widely endorsed by MPs. The Democratic Alliance and the EFF are among those who were against her appointment.
