Public Protector to investigate several complaints related to alleged irregular Covid-19 tenders

Public Protector Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s office is set to commence investigations in several COVID-19 related complaints of alleged conduct and service failure brought to her office.

She said she received 450 complaints regarding R 350.00 special social relief distress which they say they were declined without any reasonable grounds.

Among other cases the Public Protector is investigating is about alleged maladministration and irregularities in the procurement process relating to the R 37million Beitbridge Border Post Fence and the R 30milion Gauteng e-Government Information Technology tender.

“In Mpumalanga, the office is investigating alleged tender irregularities in the awarding of a Quarantine Camp tender. It has been alleged that the Zithabeseni facility, which got the contract, is dilapidated and a health hazard for everyone who is under quarantine at the premises.”

They are also investigating procurement of PPEs at inflated prices.
