North West Police Officer is set to serve a two year sentence for a crime he committed in 2015.
Thabang Monyane, who is a former Constable, was sentenced by the Schweizer-Reneke Regional Court following an incident reported in April 2015 in Bloemhof where he was on patrol when he stopped a vehicle and accused the driver of being under the influence of alcohol.
He then arrested the driver, but demanded R1000.00 bribery for his release.
Police Spokesperson in the North West Col Adéle Myburgh said that the driver was then taken home after paying R500.00.
“It was reported that Monyane went back to the driver’s place the following day to demand the outstanding R500.00, but was arrested during a controlled police action (trap) and was found in possession of the money he took from the driver.”
Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Dintletse Molefe welcomed the conviction of three years direct imprisonment and commended all role players including the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) for conducting an excellent investigation.
She further said that corrupt activities within the Service will not be tolerated and that the sentence will definitely send out a strong warning that crime does not pay and that those who commit it, will be dealt with harshly irrespective of who they are.
