The department of basic education says tough times are yet to come and both the community at large and the government needs to come together face this deadly pandemic head on.

The DBE confirmed that 1,169 teachers had contracted the Covid-19, the majority of them in the Western Cape, which accounted for half of the country’s infections.

Director General of the department Mathanzima Mweli said that they had recorded 523 children who had tested positive since schools reopened earlier this month.

“We can see that in terms of the number of learners, the Eastern Cape is quite high followed by the Western Cape. In terms of the number of staff members, the Western Cape is high due to community infections being quite high in the province followed by the Eastern Cape,” said DBE director general.

The department received major backlash prior school reopening with many parents and unions saying the government is acting reckless and gambling with schools children’s lives.

Parents called for proper preparations, basic hygiene and sanitation, by the department before gambling with their children’s lives.
