The tragedy of the passing of 20 people in a tarven in East London, Enyobeni has seen Police Minister Bheki Cele lashing out at the owner for alleged violation of liquor license.

One which is said to be clear for many to see was the use of one entrance and exit point at the premises.

Various reports allege that there was a celebration of Hlanjwa iphepha which usually happens when students celebrate the end of exams. During the celebration, an individual allegedly took out a pepper spray in an attempt to disperse the crowd. A stampede then occurred where several people got injured.

Some were also taken to hospital on allegations of poisoning.

“We have brought in a special forensic team from the police in Pretoria … They are a top team that will tell us if it was poison but we need to come back to this area to see what is happening in the shebeens and not only come back once they have killed our kids,” said Minister Cele.

Minister Cele also lashed out on parents for taking minimum responsibility on safety of their children.

“How do you sleep at night as a parent not knowing the whereabouts of your teenage child?” asked Cele.

The deceased are said to be between 13 and 18 years old.

Of the 20, seven were confirmed to be females and thirteen males.
