Police have confirmed an arrest of Emalahleni Local Municipality Ward Councillor, Hluphekile Bobotyane on five counts of alleged involvement in murder cases.

The 62 years Bobotyane appeared in the Cacadu which is popularly known as Lady Frere Magistrates Court on Friday.

Bobotyane was arrested among other suspects who were allegedly involved in the killing of five men aged between 21 and 27 in a mob on Wednesday, April 14.

Four of the said five men were confirmed dead on the scene while the fifth later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital the following day.

DPP regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali said that police were alerted about the incident and summoned to the scene.

Upon arrival they found the said two men burnt to death and while investigating the scene, they were alerted about two more men who were found hanged at the nearby forest in the neighbouring area of Maqhashu.

It is said that they had escaped the mob earlier on.

“Police have not linked Bobotyane to the murder of the two hanged men at this stage.”

Tyali added that Bobotyane has been remanded in police custody pending formal bail application on April 23rd as investigations continue on the matter.
