Former City of Johannesburg Mayor Dr Mpho Phalatse has decided to rather leave her political career and pursue her medical career.

However, Phalatse said in her statement released on her social media page that her resignation as the Democratic Alliance (DA) PR council is not a resignation from the party nor politics. She said this is temporary until further notice.

“When I came into mainstream politics in 2016, I was motivated by the desire to serve. That decision came at a huge personal sacrifice and sacrifice of my family. I left my medical profession and thriving business in order to contribute to the rebuilding of our country.”

Dr Phalatse started her political career as Health and Social Development MMC and Katerina on became a n executive mayor, a post which was not free of drama. She faced a couple of motions of no confidence against her and even went as far as the court to fight for the post.

“If would be impossible for me to move between the Healthcare and Council activities without compromising the one or the other. I have throughout my career never compromised on doing quality of work and I am concerned that faced with a choice between my Council responsibilities and medical career, I am inclined to save lives.”

She added that she went through this discussion with her family and her resignation is effective immediate on September 30th, 2023.

“I will be back” she said.
