DA fails in court to halt the EFF’s national shutdown

While the security cluster works on putting up security measures to prevent the possible wrong turn ahead of National shut down organised by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on Monday, the opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA) also tried their luck through the court to halt the protest in the Western Cape.

The DA spoke on numerous occasions and platforms that they will everything possible in their powers to stop the shutdown happening in the Western Cape, particularly Cape Town.

The EFF’s victory, the High Court dismissed the DA’s application to halt the protest.

The Court however, prevented the EFF from closing schools, businesses, roads and they also barred from inciting or promoting any form of violence.

“The [EFF] and its members, employees and officials are interdicted and prohibited from: Shutting down schools, retail stores, businesses, trade and public roads;”

“Calling for, promoting instigating or organizing the blocking of roads or railway lines, and/or the shutting down of schools, retail stores, businesses, and trades” read extract from the judgement.

DA’s was that the protest compromises people’s Constitutional rights.
