Fire claims a patient’s life in Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital

The Department of Health in Gauteng has confirmed a fire break out at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa, Tshwane which claimed a life of a 3t years old patient.

It is said according to the statement by the Department that the patient was placed in a psychiatric unit at the time when the fire broke.

“The mental Healthcare user was admitted to the hospital on 20th June 2024. She was placed in a seclusion room today (24 June) as part of her prescribed treatment. At around 18h35, a shouldering smoke and small fire broke out from the seclusion room.”

“Immediate actions were taken to safeguard the safety and the wellbeing of patients. The fire was quickly contained and extinguished by the fire brigade, but unfortunately the patient in the seclusion room sustained fatal injuries. Seventeen (17) patients in the unit were successfully evacuated and temporarily relocated to a different wing of a psychiatric department as a precautionary measure.”

The Department said that the cause of the fire is still unknown and yet to be discovered.

They have also sent heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased.
