Basic Education Department pleads with schools not to be reckless and rush to opening without following proper safety precautions.

The department said this in a statement late this week after learning about certain private and public schools who were already planning a gradual re-opening.

“In some schools teachers have been reporting for duty and parents meetings have been held where plans were made to have learners back in school in May.”

“The premature re-opening of schools is not permitted as the department is still finalising Covid-19 compliance protocols. The uniform standards will be applicable in schools as part of the measures put in place to protect learners and teachers, reduce infection and save academic year” said the department.

Minister Motshekga had announced that office based workers would gradually return to work from 4 May, school management teams on the 11 May while teachers would be reporting back on the 18th.

Learners are expected to gradually return on the 1st of June.
