Schools to Reopen on June 1st

After a long thorough discussion with stakeholders Basic Education Minister has finally announced that schools are set to reopen on June 1st.

The minister has however said that this will only apply to grade 7 and grade 12 learners.

“The national coronavirus command council and cabinet has approved the reopening of schools as of June 1. We will start with grade 7s and 12s,” she said.

She said this during a media briefing on the status of school reopenings during this lockdown.

She also added that the revised school calendar is yet to be gazetted and it will outline guidelines on school reopenings.

“The coronavirus has brought a lot of anxiety to us as a nation. I am aware that parents and children, teaching and non-teaching staff … have been asking questions over the future of the academic year and what is going to happen to them and the academic year,” she said.
