Police Minister Bheki Cele has his hands filled and his back against a wall following an outright breaking of the Level 4 Covid-19 national lockdown.

President Ramaphosa said a week ago that mass gatherings are prohibited under Level 4 lockdown amid the rapid spread of Covid-19 infections.

However, scenes that were shown at the former President’s homestead Jacob Zuma, at Nkandla this past weekend showed no adherence of the law.

As a result police Minister Cele received a backlash for lack of action from his blue men and women who failed enforce the law by arresting those who were violating lockdown regulations.

This saw opposition party Democratic Alliance (DA) calling for him to act and not play a blind eye.

“The DA is calling on the Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, to take action against those demonstrators that flagrantly violated Level 4 lockdown regulations outside Nkandla over the weekend, in full view of multiple news cameras that broadcasted their defiance to the world.”

“Despite the Minister himself and his South African Police Service (SAPS) officials being all too happy to enforce these regulations on multitudes of vulnerable citizens who do not have political connections. These ordinary South Africans now holds criminal records for such serious crimes as buying formula for their sick new-born or darting onto a beach to fetch their toddler – police time well-spent.”

The party said this through a statement where they also added that if the ANC government cannot enforce the laws they have put in place, they might as well scrap them.

Minister Cele said during a short media briefing that the situation at Nkandla was tense and it required police to be more careful of how they handle it because anything could’ve happened.

He said that they had to do everything they could to avoid another Marikana incident where people lost their lives.
