While Adv Kholeka Gcaleka waits to hear whether she gets appointed as the new Public Protector or not, the suspended Public Protector Adv Busisiwe Mkhwebane is also awaiting to hear about her fate next week.
The National Assembly Programming Committee (NAPC) agreed that both votes for appointment and dismissing of Public Protector would take place on Monday, 11 September, at a fully physical sitting of the National Assembly in the Cape Town City Hall.
Mkhwebane’s tenure as the Public Protector was not without any challenges being taken in and out of court for her findings. Most of which were against her.
The last straw was when she started Phala Phala farm investigations against President Matamela Ramaphosa which led to her suspension in July 2022.
Following that, a Section 194 enquiry into her fitness to hold office was started and found that she be removed from the position late last month.
Both the IFP and the ANC supported the recommendation that she be removed while the EFF and ATM were against her removal.
