Mpumalanga Hawks Spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi has confirmed an arrest of three traffic officers who were caught demanding bribes instead of issuing fines for traffic violations in Mpumalanga.
The police say they received several complaints from motorists about three traffic officers, 59 years old Victor Mkhize, 53 years old Johannes Tlou and 38 years old Xolani Nkosi from Emalahleni Municipality who were constantly demanding bribes instead of issuing fines for traffic violations.
Complainants alleged that every time when the three accused were on duty, they engaged in the same corrupt activity.
“An intelligence driven investigation was initiated against the accused in 2019 and in January 2020, an undercover operation was conducted by the team and the same suspects received gratification for not issuing traffic fines for traffic violations during the operation” said Captain Sekgotodi.
They were both arrested early Monday morning while reporting on duty during a sting operation by the Road Traffic Management Corporation and the Hawks.
They made an appearance at the Emalahleni Magistrates Court and were both released on R 2000.00 bail each pending further investigations. Their case was postponed to March 10, 2021.
