Jail time for ex-girlfriend who shot and killed police officer

30 years old Zanele Mkhonto is set to spend 20 years in prison for the murder of a 47 years old Police officer Sergeant Mandlenkosi Happy Thwala who was stationed at Kabokweni police station.
The court heard that duo was in a romantic relationship and they were residing together from January-July 2022 in Gedlembane, Pienaar. After realising that their relationship was volatile she left to her parental home.
Thwala took his last breathe a month later on August 02nd, 2022 when Mkhonto visited him at his place where an altercation occurred.
The deceased fell asleep and the accused took the deceased’s service pistol and fatally shot him several times while asleep in bed. She then left the scene, taking the deceased’s firearm and vehicle.
She got rid of the firearm after coming across a roadblock. The firearm was found by members of the public who alerted the police about it the following morning.
She also broke the story to her friend the following morning. She had been in police custody since the arrest following a successful bail opposing by the State.
