Eastern Cape Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba told journalists on Monday that there was a surge in the number of trauma cases in hospitals over the weekend as a result of alcohol.

Gomba said that Frere Hospital alone in East London, had 67 trauma cases linked to alcohol.

An issue which was responded to by the Premier, Oscar Mabuyane who then called for the national command council to consider banning the sale of alcohol in the province.

The province’s MEC is not the only one to complain about the strain alcohol brought to the already struggling department nationally with shortages of practitioners and an added workload of Covid-19.

Mabuyane will petition the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, to have the ban on alcohol reintroduced in his province.

His call received mixed reactions with liquor traders rejecting it and Eastern Cape Liquor Board supporting the call.
