Department of Trade and Industry has published latest regulations on Covid-19 national lockdown that seek to protect consumers from retailers who illegally over price essential products during this lockdown.

These regulations which were gazetted on Friday, March 3, made a list of some of the essential goods which customers should be paying attention to so they don’t get over charged.

Products include basic food and consumer items, emergency products and services, medical and hygiene supplies and emergency clean-up products.

A ten page document outlining the regulations stipulates that a firm found to have contravened these regulations is liable for penalties of a fine up to R1 million or 10% of the firm’s turnover and imprisonment for a period not exceeding 12 months.
