Following the meeting between the Diepsloot community, Home Affairs Minister Motsoaledi and Police Minister Bheki Cele, Minister Motsoaledi said he now understands that the fight and uproar which led to the death of a Zimbabwean national comes from the community’s outcry about the growing levels of crime which are said to be committed by foreign nationals in the main.
Community members told the ministers that they are certain that some police officers work with the illegal immigrants because they do report criminal acts but no arrests are made or even if they are made you are more likely to see the same perpetrators roaming around the streets within a short space of time.
They said they are more concerned about crime in their community more than documentation.
“The situation goes beyond that, it’s not an issue of documentation but it’s criminality,”
“It’s not easy for a woman to be raped at gunpoint in front of their husband and children and they say they believe it’s foreign nationals who have been doing that” said Minister Motsoaledi after the meeting.
The community members also that their community is becoming unsafe daily.
“We at Home Affairs have brought 25 immigration officers, we will leave them for three months so that they may deal with issues of immigration in accordance with South African law,” Motsoaledi said.
