The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for travel ban to and from India following new Covid-19 variant B.1.617 that has seen the country recording more cases and related fatalities in the past few weeks.

The call for the travel ban follows recent cases that were reported in a cargo ship from India of 14 occupants.

The developments of the cargo ship prompted health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize to release a statement where he assured the country that they have not yet recorded a case of such a variant on the South African land at the moment.

EFF said through a statement that the government is the reason why we find ourselves in the middle of a pandemic in the country because they failed on several occasions to follow global trends of banning certain travels where the Covid-19 seems to be more stronger.

“Their lack of a response and necessary policy intervention to ensure the variant that exists in India does not spread in South Africa, is no different from their childish response in March 2020, when they refused to utelise State resources to quarantine 11 passengers from Italy, and opted to allow them to self-quarantine”.

They continued to ask the government to exercise it’s powers and make sure that points are locked from India entering SA and all who travelled from the to be quarantined in a State facility under State supervision.
