“Safety is in our schools should be a collective responsibility”

Basic Education Minister Mme Angie Motshekga says the safety of learners and educators in schools should be a responsibility of both parents and communities at large.
Minister Motshekga said these in a statement following a fatal shooting of a teacher in a school in the Western Cape where it is said that the learner shot and killed a teacher.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at Heinz Park Primary School in Phillipi Western Cape.
“The number of violent crimes taking place against our teachers In schools or anywhere else in the communities is quite disturbing. We condemn any kind of violence in our schools.”
The Minister want on to say that the department is working with law enforcement agencies to curb the violence both in schools and in communities.
She added that they will be doing a joined campaign against GBV and violence in schools among others together with Social Development and Justice & Correctional Services department.
The Minister strongly condemned the murder and sent condolences to the family of the deceased teacher.
