Prosecutor arrested for demanding R 600 bribe

A 50 years old prosecutor has been found guilty and sentenced for demanding bribe to have accused person’s case withdrawn. Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula said that the said matter of the prosecutor, Ronny Songwane who was stationed at Vryburg Magistrates Court occurred in July 2016 when the complainant who was the suspect at the time, was arrested on shoplifting charges.Songwane demanded a gratification fo have the matter withdrawn.

The matter was reported to the Hawks after initially paying R 600 during first appearance with the promise of further paying R 400.

An entrapment was set up for him by the Hawks and he was arrested after receiving R 400.

He was sentenced to 8 months imprisonment or R 20 000 fine.
