Man kidnapped after RAF payment, account emptied

A tireless efforts of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) has led to a successful arrest of one of the kidnapping suspects.

The 25-year-old suspect is said to be linked to a disturbing case of kidnapping and financial exploitation in Tsolo, Eastern Cape.Reports by the police say that a Road Accident Fund (RAF) beneficiary was kidnapped shortly after receiving a R 300 000 payment from the organization in November 2023.

He was approached by two men claiming to be medical doctors from the organization, RAF, and convinced him to get into the car with them.

Under this false pretence, the victim was reportedly kidnapped and transported over 800 kilometres to Klerksdorp in the North West province.

While held against his will, the victim’s bank account was allegedly drained, with funds transferred to accounts linked to the suspects. Fortunate for him, he was later located and safely reunited with his family.

A breakthrough came when the Hawks’ Eastern Cape-based Kidnapping Task Team, working in collaboration with their North West counterparts, traced one of the suspects to Klerksdorp.
