Almost two years later, the NPA has managed to secure a successful conviction for the a 26 years old man who killed and dismembered his girlfriend’s corpse and his cousin.
High Court Division in Johannesburg has handed down a life sentence and a further 10 years for defeating the ends of justice and 15 years for violation of a corpse to Flavio Hlabangwane who stabbed his girlfriend to death on November 2021.
NPA Spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwana said that the court heard from the convicted Hlabangwane during his confession after pleading guilty that he attempted to get rid of the evidence dismembering the corpse of his girlfriend, placed the body parts in different locations and kept some in his fridge.
“In his plea explanation, Hlabangwane told the court that an argument over his use of the deceased’s bank card without her permission ensued. He pushed Pitse, who hit the back of her head on the stove. She then charged toward Hlabangwane, who took out a knife and stabbed her several times.”
“Upon realising that he had killed her, he tried to get rid of the evidence by dismembering the arms, legs, head, and torso and thereafter disposed of the head and torso at different locations but stored the limbs in his fridge.”
Hlabangwane pleaded guilty to murder, defeating the ends of justice as well as the violation of a corpse. He said he killed the girlfriend after finding out that she was unfaithful to him.
The sentences were ordered to run concurrently with the one imposed on the murder charge.
