Investigation Launched in the Fatal Shooting of a SAPS Trainee

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, has launched an investigation following the death of South African Police Service (SAPS) trainee at a SAPS Operational and Tactical Training Academy in Thabazimbi, Limpopo, this past Sunday.

Police Spokesperson Colonel Athlenda Mathe said the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for thorough investigation.

Several reports said that the trainee got shot when the instructor was demonstrating how to use a firearm.

“This is an unfortunate incident. We request space to conduct a thorough investigation to be able to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. We pledge our full support to the family of the deceased and all affected,” said Commissioner Masemola
