human trafficking case against a Mozambican national has been withdrawn together with his girlfriend.
The 43 years old Eduardo Teixeira was arrested I 2022 by the Hawks in Mpumalanga after it was reported that he was involved in the trafficking of people from his country Mozambique, in South Africa.
This was confirmed by Hawks Spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi.
“It is alleged that the accused recruited victims from Mozambique promising them good employment in South Africa. On their arrival they were taken into the farm in Bethal. They were forced to work in the farm and also sent to steal coal during the night in the mines.”
“The matter was reported to the Hawks Secunda based Serious Organised Crime Investigation and the case was opened for further investigation. During investigation, it was established that the accused lied to the victims because none of what they were promised was kept.”
“The suspect was arrested together with his girlfriend whom the case against was withdrawn.”
He was sentenced to two years imprisonment which was suspended for 5 years by the Bethal Regional Court.
