The family of the deceased 21 years old Precious Ramabulana and the community were left devastated to hear the horrific scene of how the college student took her last breath in the most gruesome manner at the hands of a 29 years old Aubrey Manaka.

Appearing at the High Court in Limpopo, Polokwane, Manaka was given eight years behind bars for house breaking with intent to rape, life imprisonment for murder, life imprisonment for rape and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances after he pleaded guilty to all four counts.

Manaka told the court how he first fell in love with the deceased having seen her only once dancing with her friends at her home. Not knowing how she would react, Manaka said he was afraid to approach her to tell her how he feels about her and instead left watch soccer while having few alcoholic beverages.

The is according to Mashudu Malabi Dzhangi Regional DPP Spokesperson in Limpopo who said Manaka said he later came back in early hours of the morning and knocked to the door of Precious’ room. She was afraid to open the door, he alleged. Manaka then decided to forcefully open the window and gained entrance after which there was wrestling between the two, as they heard in court.

“It is at this point that he decided to stab her, several times on her body with a knife before raping her and further stabbed her several times after raping her. He then left the scene with her cellphones.”

“Manaka told the court that he continued to rape her while she was bleeding profusely and further stabbed her several times so that she could die and not identify him.”

Dzangi added that Manaka pleaded for mercy and forgiveness from both the family and community during his testimony in court.

In aggravation of sentence, the state advocate, Trott Mphahlele called the aunt of Ramabulana who testified about the impact the death had on the mother of the deceased as she is rejecting family members, wanting to be alone all the time. She requested the court to take into consideration the nature of the offence that is very gruesome and inhumane. She concluded by saying, “we saw all the wounds with our eyes”.

The sentiments of this ordeal being done with a clear conscious were echoed by the judge who stated that the accused stabbed the deceased to make sure that she was permanently removed from the earth.

“These are the deeds of the evil person and the deceased has died a gruesome death. Women have the right to walk freely and society require protection from the courts from people like Manaka in order to gain confidence in the criminal justice system. Precious was 21 years of age at the time of her death and still had life ahead of her. When the crime was committed, Precious Ramabulana was defenceless and unarmed therefore a suitable sentence must be imposed to deter future offenders”, he said.

The court sentenced Manaka to life imprisonment and ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
