Justice and Correctional Services Minister Ronald Lamola says he is proud of the performance of the 2020 inmate matric results having hit one of the most record high percentages.

Minister Lamola read out congratulatory messages to the candidates nationally at the Leeuwkop Correctional service Centre on Thursday following the release of the results on Tuesday.

The inmates managed to overcome the challenge that was brought by the Covid-19 pandemic and out-performed candidates who were outside.

Having achieved 77.3% in 2018, 82.6% in 2019 they managed to raise the bar by 3.7% to make 86.3% in 2020. That is 10.1% more than the national pass rate on the candidates who were outside the prison cells.

“For the 2020 academic year, (Department of correctional Services) DCS full time learners achieved a pass rate of 86.3%. When inclusive of part-time learners, DCS is standing at 81.3% pass rate. This is higher than the national average of 76.2%, it is also higher than the highest provincial percentage of 85.1% attained by the Free State” said the Minister.

Minister also added that they managed to obtain almost 80 distinctions and produced 78 Bachelor passes. The best performing learner is Lwazi Chamane who obtained 80.6% in Usethubeni Youth under Durban Management Area in Kwa-Zulu Natal and also got four distinctions.
