City of Jo’burg Mayor passes away after a month in the office

With just a little over a month before the 2021 local government elections, the ANC has just learned news of the passing of their newly elected City of Johannesburg Mayor Jolidee Matongo.

The 46 years old Matongo had just been elected as the new Mayor of Jo’burg a little over a month ago on August 10th 2021 having succeeded the late Geoff Makhubo who lost the battle against Covid-19.

News that were widely reported by national media houses in the late evening hours of Saturday night said that Matongo lost his life in a motor vehicle accident.

He had also just spent a day in Soweto accompanied by ANC President Matamela Ramaphosa on a campaign trail building up to the elections.

The ANC is also yet to issue a statement on the matter.
