23 years old man facing extortion and kidnapping charges in Kgabalatsane to remain in police custody

An extortion and kidnapping case against a 23 years old man from Tshwane has been postponed to September 23 after making a brief appearance at Attridgeville Magistrates Court.
The said suspect Thabang Mokoena together with his accomplice who is now at large allegedly approached a 30 years old victim on September 14 just after dropping off her child at a creche about a car she was driving, VW Polo Vivo.
They introduced themselves as police officers and further lied to her about the car having been cloned. They then requested that she makes cooperates with them and go to Haartebees Police Station.
NPA Spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said through a statement that while allegedly driving to the said police station, one of the suspect drove the victim’s car.
They then along the way tied the victim and put her in the boot of the car and drive away to a different location with her.
“They indicated that a Polo Vivo motor vehicle belonging to the victim had a twin-vehicle that had been used in various robberies in the area.”
“It is alleged that the two called Mokgatle’s brother, a practicing attorney in Pretoria demanding R500 000-00 ransom money. On 15 September 2021 police received intelligence information that the victim was kept at Kgabalatsane, North-West Province.”
“The police followed up on the information and found the victim tied in a certain house in Kgabalatsane. Mokoena was found with the victim in possession of a toy gun” said Mahanjana.
The matter was postponed to 23 September 2021 for bail investigations. The other suspect is still at large and the police investigations continues.
They are both facing charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, kidnapping, possession of dangerous weapon and extortion.
