Stepfather gets over 173 years imprisonment for repeatedly raping stepdaughter

KwaZulu-Natal High Court Division has handed a nine life term plus 173 years sentence to a 43 years old stepfather who on numerous occasions sexually assaulted and exploited his 9 years old stepdaughter.

The 43 years old man who cannot be named for safety and identity concealing of the minor started in January 2017 not long after the mother whom he was in a relationship with passed away.

It is said that the child’s family fought for the victim’s custody to which they failed after the 43 years old perpetrator also fought back until he won custody and guardianship and primary caregiving rights to her. He later on relocated to Gauteng with the victim.

Director for Public Prosecution’s (DPP) Spokesperson in KZN Sipho Ngwema said that the perpetrator started grooming the victim by exposing her to pornographic material which later escalated to rape and she was raped up until they moved back to KZN.

“The rapes continued in addition to other forms of abuse such as sexual exploitation, compelled self-sexual assault. He filmed his sexual engagements with the minor and distributed the material to other people. Also he made her pose wearing revealing adult lingerie as he took photos.”

“He forced her to watch him and his girlfriend engage in sexual intercourse. On one occasion the accused and an unknown male simultaneously engaged in sexual intercourse with the young girl. She was prevented from going to school and was kept at home to cook and clean the house when necessary” added Ngwema.

The young girl was rescued by the community after she confided to a neighbor who informed the community members and the perpetrator was apprehended and assaulted by the community before being rescued and arrested by the police in June 2018.

He was found guilty of 11 counts of rape, exhibition of pornography to a minor, sexual grooming, creation, possession & distribution of victim pornography, compelled sexual assault and human trafficking amongst several others.

The NPA has welcomed the conviction and added that the perpetrator abused his power as a trusted person to the victim and he deserves to be locked away from the society for the longest time.
