In an effort to pay homage to school learners who lost their lives in a horrific accident that occurred over 56 years ago, Kaabo Foundation in collaboration NRC Mamelodi West hosted academic awards at Nkotoloane Primary School in Mmametlhake.

Page3 Online News wrote a story about the said accident which occurred in 1965, May 1st where 9 out of almost 30 learners who were coming from a music competition got hit by a reckless driver.

Years later the victims of this accident still haven’t found justice. As a result, they decided to open a culpable homicide case on June 9, 2021.

Giving thanks to Kaabo Foundation for their effort, Nkotoloane Primary School Principal Mr Matjiane said it is rather sad that among many other things the school is known for, this tragic accident always comes up.

In honor of those who lost their lives, the Foundation together with the school decided to start this award ceremony and name it after the surviving learner Mr Sydney Tabane.

Principal Matjiane who was happy for the event said Mr Tabane pushed for this idea in an attempt to help the school find a new path and find a positive side out of this legacy.

“The idea was motivated by the way Mr Tabane was and is committed to try finding closure for what happened in 1965. When people think of 1965 they must not only think of the bad side. We also want to motivate learners to compete in a healthy positive way.”

He added that from here the ceremony will be hosted quarterly.
