Marapyane Taxi Association and Pankop Security assist police to apprehend suspected robber

A joint high speed chase between the police, Marapyane Taxi Association and Pankop Security has led to an arrest of a robbery suspect who allegedly robbed a furniture shop and staff members of items amounting to an estimated R 200 000.

Colonel Donald Mdhluli said that the incident allegedly occurred a week ago, January 19th at Marapyane Shopping Mall around 09h40 am where the suspects are said to have held the employees at gunpoint then reportedly robbed them of various items, which include cell phones, play stations and laptops valued at more than R200 000 and fled the scene using a white Nissan NP 200 as a getaway vehicle, which was parked outside.

Upon being notified about the crime, the police spotted the vehicle matching the description and Kwamhlanga K9 Unit, Modimolle K9 Unit, Rus Der Venter SAPS, Pienaars River SAPS together with the above mentioned parties engaged in a high speed chase.

The driver of the vehicle, 48 years old Tshepo Mhlhanga was later on arrested after abandoning the motor vehicle in the bushes attempting to flee on foot.

“A firearm with a magazine and some live ammunition were reportedly found in his possession. The serial numbers of the firearm were filed off. Police further recovered a Jamming device as well as eight cell phones believed to have been stolen during the robbery.

“The suspect was arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition, as well as for possession of suspected stolen properties.”

“Currently there is no indication that the Nissan NP 200 was stolen however the vehicle was confiscated together with the other items for further investigation.”
