As the debate to whether reopen schools or not continues, some parents have their promise to not allow their children to go back to school amid the fear of contracting Covid-19.

Addressing the media on Friday, Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said the department in the province has recorded about 30% of learners in matric who opted to not return.

“It is still worrying that we can’t account for almost 30% of grade 12 learners who are not attending school in Gauteng.”

“It is something we are working very hard to rectify because it has implications in terms of the skills base of the province but, most importantly, in terms of transition to higher education,” said MEC Lesufi.
