Department of Correctional Services (DCS) says order has been restored at Boksburg Correctional Services following a protest by inmates who were against the searching operation and barricaded the sectional gate.
The incident occurred on Monday, 02 January when a group of certain inmates who were retaliated to a mandatory searching operation by the national National Task Team of the Department of Correctional Services as part of its Festive Season Security Operation.
The incident made its way to the public through social media when several videos were circulated showing officials trying to calm down the matter.
In a statement released by the Department, they said that the retaliation and unruly behavior was mostly from inmates who knew they have illegal contrabands hidden somewhere in the facility.
“DCS shall never hesitate to act with vigour in order to ensure that there is no dereliction from the core mandate of corrections. Inmates attempting to undermine authority of the state know fully of the consequences and DCS will never compromise safety and security of other inmates, officials, members of the community and service providers.”
“Proliferation of mobile phones and other contrabands is a grave concern for the Department and these have to be removed from our facilities. Some of the images circulating via social media platforms emanate from inmates, making a mockery of the correctional system. This is a clear indication that the few unruly inmates who sought to prevent the searching exercise, knew fully that they were hiding contrabands in their cells” said the Department.
They also said that they will not be deterred or prevented by unruly behaviour from doing their job.
