South African Social Services Security Agency (SASSA) has sent a warning against parents who continue to withdraw grants of their dead children.
The department said this occasion usually occurs where a child dies few weeks before the pay day and instead of the parents informing the department so they can discontinue the payment, they withdraw the money and still delay to inform the department.
While some made arguments that economic conditions are tough and the money is used for the burial, the department still said that the act cannot be justified as it is criminal.
“Parents are warned not to continue with fraudulent activities, profiting on the loss of a child. It is insensitive and also a criminal offence, which will lead to arrest and prosecution by law enforcement institutions” said the department’s representative.
