The DA has lost an advertising slot on the biggest free to air broadcaster, South African Broadcast Corporate (SABC) for their advert ahead of elections on May 29th.

The party has been making headlines not so much on the message in their ad but what they showed, by burning a national flag.

In a statement released by the SABC, they said they wrote a letter to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) rejecting the advert.

“The SABC has been monitoring the outcry from South Africans of all races condemning the advertisement which is currently in circulation on various media platforms. Likewise, the SABC believes that the advertisement encourages damage of treasured national symbols.”

“The national flag is a national symbol which represents diverse elements of the country and national unity. Additionally, it is expected that the national flag should be accorded with dignity and respect. Thus, the flag is not a representation of a political party but the nation at large.”

The SABC also added that they noted condemnation of the ad by President Matamela Ramaphosa.

They also advised the DA to rather revisit the ad.
