Department of Education started 2026 academic year on a bad footing as classes get disturbed and compromised by bad weather.

Various parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga were heavily affected by severe rain fall which saw certain roads being forced to close.

The Department of Education in Mpumalanga has advised principals in schools to rather be cautious and not rush to start with schooling program\classes even when the weather does not permit.

In a written statement, they advised the principals to be in consultation with the school governing bodies to discuss best options in hand.

They also encouraged them to apply their discretion guided by the realities on the ground, when deciding on the continuation or temporary suspension of teaching and learning.

“The Department strongly cautions school communities, learners, and staff against crossing overflowing bridges, rivers, streams, or any hazardous areas.”

“These dangers remain significant despite what may appear to be improving weather conditions.”

“The Department will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide further guidance as necessary.”
