The High Court sitting in Mpumalanga has handed down a 22 years jail term for a 26 years mother for the murder of her infant daughter immediately after giving birth.
NPA Spokesperson Monica Nyuswa said that Phindile Sibiya from Belfast in Bushbuckridge told the court that she had met a man around the area where she lives who proposed his love for her and accepted his plea for a relationship after promising her marriage at a later stage.
Nyuswa also that it was during the second meeting as a couple when they had a consensual sex which led to her getting pregnant with her third child. She then made several attempts to inform the boyfriend about the pregnancy but her call couldn’t go through on several occasions.
The pregnancy led to her and her mother arguing where she asked her if she was pregnant and she denied even though she was pregnant.
“The mother then threatened her, that should it be true that she was pregnant, she was going to chase her away from the house, as she was already having two minor kids from different fathers who were not supporting the children.”
“She then decided to go to the clinic to terminate the pregnancy but she was unsuccessful because she was in the last stages of the pregnancy. She kept her pregnancy a secret until the delivery date, which was on 01 January 2022. She felt labour pains went to the toilet on two occasions where she then took a pair of scissors with her. On her way to the toilet she knelt down and gave birth to a female child whom she immediately stabbed with scissors several times until she died.”
Nyuswa said that Sibiya confessed to her mother in the morning after being questioned about blood stains. She then admitted to killing the baby and took her mother to the place where she had concealed the corpse and dug it out.
The mother reported the incident to the police who later on arrested her.
Postmortem presented in court revealed that indeed, the baby was born alive.
The NPA has welcomed the sentence.
