Man arrested with damaged Transnet property

The Hawks in Mpumalanga have confirmed the arrest of a truck driver who was found in possession of stolen Transnet property.

Captain Dindeo Sekgotodi said that they received a tip off on Friday, 6 October 2023 at about 02:00 which was responded to by the Flying Squad members regarding a truck which was loaded with railway tracks. 

The team identified a truck that was driving along the N4 highway near Schagen. They stopped and searched the truck. Upon the search, railway tracks covered under a blue tarpolin were found.

Upon request, the driver complied with the instructions given by the officers to provide documentation of the goods, he produced documentation from a cell phone.

However, it was later discovered that, that was the modus operandi used by criminals using the same method to commit such crimes and a similar method was used before to commit a similar crime.

The driver was informed that the documents were not legal and that SAPS members would escort the truck to Nelspruit SAPS.

A case of tampering and damaging of essential infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen property was opened on behalf of Transnet.

The suspects were arrested, and exhibits were seized for further investigation. The investigation is continuing.
