Verulam Regional Court has sentenced a 25 years old Lindokuhle Mlangeni to life in prison for a rape of 19 years old girl.

The 19 years old victim told the court that Mlangeni kidnapped her on her way to a taxi rank after work in January 2019. She said that he approached her seeking a relationship with her in which she declined and walked away afterwards.

She also said that Mlangeni then followed her and pulled her to the nearby bush where he strangled her until she became unconscious and woke up naked later on.

He then pulled her with her hair to his house after giving her his trousers to wear and continued to rape her when they arrived at his house where he locked her inside until the following afternoon.

DPP Regional Spokesperson Natasha Kara says the victim went home the following day in Mlangeni’s clothes and told her mother about the incident and she accompanied her to the doctor the following day.

A rape case against Mlangeni was reported a month later.

“She was able to recognise Mlangeni as she had seen him at the taxi rank a few times. She pointed out his house to the police and he was arrested. She was later taken to the Thuthuzela Care Centre, an NPA one-stop rape crisis centre, based at the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital where she got access to post trauma services.”

“During court proceedings, Mlangeni denied kidnapping the woman but maintained that the sexual encounter was consensual.”

“Regional court prosecutor, Ishara Sewnarayan, led the victim’s evidence, then the first report, which came from her mother and medical evidence. The court found the victim to be a credible and reliable witness in spite of Mlangeni’s denial.”

The victim said in a victim statement that incident has cost her her life as she has lost faith even in God and has quit job in fear of being attacked again if she goes outside.
