A dramatic scene where police officers were met outrage after being poured with hot water eventually ended in an arrest.

Former ANC branch chairman in Buffalo City Metro Zolani Xego got on the wrong side of the law after being found guilty of faking his death to claim R 3.6million on life policy in January 2015 by the East London Magistrates Court.

He was sentenced to 15 years in prison but later on appealed his conviction. Grahams town High Court dismissed Xego’s appeal to have his conviction overturned but instead reduced it to eight (8) years.

NPA Regional Spokesperson Anelisa Ngcakani said that Xego was then granted R 5000.00 bail after indicating that he would have the conviction petitioned in Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) which he never did.

“A notice was served on Xego on 04 May 2021 for him to report to the clerk of the court at the East London Magistrates Court to commence serving his prison sentence. He had until Monday, 10 May 2021 at 9am to hand himself in. He never did and consequently, a warrant for his arrest was issued on 10 May 2021.”

Ngcakani said that upon arrival of the officials at his home, around 7am, Xego refused to open for them and instead poured hot water on them but they eventually gained entry and later on retreated after he locked himself inside his home.

But he ended up handing himself over to the police when his lawyer arrived on the scene.
