Department of Education in Northern Cape seems to be having tough time in curbing the spread of Covid-19 in the schools having confirmed over 300 cases.
The Department has released a statement recently having reported at least 339 new COVID-19 cases among teachers, school support staff and learners.
As a result, six schools were forced to close during the past week.
The rise in the number of infections also saw the national Health Department raising concern about rising infections in young people between the ages of 10 and 19 in the province.
They further called on parents\guardians to work hand-in-hand with government and the schools to ensure the children are not infected and also limit their movement.
“The high infection rate, especially amongst our learners, is very concerning and we appeal to parents and school communities to limit movement or social interaction of our learners whilst at home.”
“Schools are a microcosm of our society and at this stage mirror the level of infections in our communities. School communities must remain vigilant whilst we still find ourselves in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic,” the statement said.
The Department reported a week ago that they recorded a little over 500 cases with over 80% of them being learners who tested positive.
