Cash-In-Transit heist trio remain in police custody

A case against a trio allegedly involved in a Cash-In-Transit heist and attempted murder has been postponed to August 21st.

A taxi driver Mosa Bhefika Ngwenyama, Ali Obi Ebrahim who is a Malawian spaza shop cashier and Lawrence Lubisi aged 30, 24 and 44 years respectively were arrested following a heist crime that they committed on the 11th of August 2023.

“Armored vehicle (AV) of Fidelity was traveling from Malelane towards Tonga on 11 August 2023 when the fidelity vehicle was attacked by a group of criminals. Approximately 15 km from the N4, the AV was rammed by a C- class, Mercedes Benz.”

“The AV lost control and overturned. The AV was bombed, and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen. This cash was destined for a business in Tonga. Suspects fled in the direction of Tonga.”

Captain Dineo Sekgotodi of the Hawks in Mpumalanga said that not long after the incident had occurred, a multi-disciplinary intelligence driven operation conducted by the team consisting of the Hawks Nelspruit based Serious Organised Crime Investigation, Provincial task team, Crime Intelligence National Office, NIU, TRT and private companies ensued at Schoemansdal.

It was later on discovered that the 44 years old Lubisi is the owner of the safe house and also a Messenger at the Department of Agriculture.

Captain Sekgotodi said that several exhibits were seized during the operation in Schoemansdal which included Mercedes-Benz ML 350, which was reported stolen at Masoyi in July 2023, FORD Ranger bakkie, which was reported stolen in  Bushbuckridge in May 2023, 3.1 × 9mm pistol serial no T062015 H00226 (Sigana/f),status currently unknown, 5.1 x Coin bullet proof vest, 6. 1x SANDF jacket, 7.3 x balaclavas, 8.1 x hand gloves, Clothing of the suspects and 1 x AK 47

They made their first appearance at Malelane Magistrate Court where they were remanded in police custody.
