Baby found abandoned with ambilical cord inside pit toilet

The Calcutta Police in Mpumalanga have opened a case of child neglect following a discovery of a new born baby who was found with an umbilical cord still attached to him in a toilet.

The incident is said to have occurred at  at Calcutta on Sunday morning, 15 October 2023 around 10:40 at a certain church in Ronaldsey Trust, Ximhungwe near Bushbuckridge.

Colonel Donald Mdhluli said the baby was rescued by civilians who allegedly heard the baby crying inside a pit toilet.

Police was summoned to the scene after digging the toilet to rescue the baby who was later on rushed to hospital for medical attention.

“Police are still in pursuit of the child’s mother and no one has been arrested so far. Members of the public with information on her whereabouts are urged to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MySAPS App. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.”

“The incident has been strongly condemned by the management of the SAPS in Mpumalanga and members of the public are urged to make use of services from Social Workers, Faith-Based-Organizations and other structures in the community rather than to take bad decisions.”
