Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane is set to visit Refalotse Primary School in Wintervedlt, Tshwane following the death of a grade 6 learner drowned in a swimming pool during a school trip.

In a statement released by the department, they said that the learner was part of a group of learners who were accompanied by educators and some parents to a resort.

Later on during the day at lunch, the learners were given a go ahead to put on their swimwear and head on to the pools with supervision from their teachers.

“It is alleged that the teachers and parents were alerted by learners of a fellow learner who was unresponsive in one of the swimming pools. The educators are reported to have immediately removed the learner from the swimming pool and tried to resuscitate him while waiting for emergency services and police to respond accordingly.”

The learner was unfortunately certified dead on the scene.
