Correctional Services Dept recorded 46 Covid-19 related deaths of inmates and officials

As the number of Covid-19 cases continue to prison inmates are not spared with the number of confirmed cases now sitting at 1 485.
The number was confirmed by the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services Ronald Lamola during a Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster (JCPS) media briefing at the Union Buildings in Tshwane.
He said that the department is still continuing to implement its COVID-19 Disaster Management Response Strategy to mitigate against the ravages of the pandemic across all of its 243 correctional centres in the country.
A total number of 3 688 COVID-19 cases were confirmed compromising of 2 203 officials and 1 485 inmates.
“We have also recorded 2 235 recoveries, of which 1 231 cases are for inmates. Therefore, there are 239 active cases for inmates. Unfortunately, 15 inmates and 31 officials have succumbed to COVID-19” said Minister Lamola.
