The newly appointed Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton Mckenzie said on several occasions that he plans to root out the rot and the corruption in his department in an effort to support well deserving athletes and artists.
He wrote a post on his social media page requesting that the names of those who have benefitted monetarily from the Department be published and made public.
“I have given an instruction that a list be published of all Artist, Creatives & Sports people who have been receiving money from the Department of Sport, Arts & Culture be published inclusive of amounts & reasons. The time where only a select connected few benefit is over.”
The red berets, EFF, were not happy with how Minister approached the matter seeing that a BET award winning artist Makhadzi was dragged after it was discovered she was paid R 230 000.00.
However, the matter was clarified that the money paid to her was for services rendered not grants or anything else.
Earlier this month the Limpopo born Matorokisi hit maker went to MacG Podcast and Chill and said that she is struggling financially because of the issues she has with the South African Revenue Services (SARS).
She said she is broke now and every time she gets paid she has to pay SARS.
“I had to borrow money from the loan shark to come to America to attend these awards.”
The EFF condemned Minister Mckenzie and said he should’ve dealt with the matter directly instead of shaming her when she needs the most help.
“Instead of addressing their stance on official supporters, the department chose to deflect by disclosing the amounts of money they paid to Makhadzi for her performances and appearances. This attempt to portray these payments as a form of support is both disingenuous and reprehensible.”
The party insisted that Makhadzi’s name was not supposed to be included on the list because she rendered Services for the Department and she was rightfully paid.
