Chief Justice Zondo has declared a date for first sitting of the National Assembly

Estimated reading time: 4 minute(s)

Let the business of the National Assembly continue, says the Chief Justice Raymond Zondo in a media statement released through his office late afternoon on Monday, 10 June.

In just four days after the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) declared the 2024 national election results, they handed a list of designated Members of Parliament (MPs) and that of Members of the Provincial Legislature (MPLs) to the Chief Justice who then handed over the list to the Secretary of the Parliament as per procedure.

“Section 51(1) of the Constitution provides that, after an election, the first sitting of the National Assembly must take place at a time and on a date determined by the Chief Justice but not more than 14 days after election results have been declared.”

“By virtue of the powers vested in the Chief Justice (CJ) in terms of Section 51(1) of the Constitution, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has determined that the first sitting of the National Assembly shall be on Friday, 14th June 2024 at 10:00. The 14th June falls within the prescribed period” read an extract of the statement.

CJ Zondo will administer an oath or affirmation of the said MPs while MPLs will be administered by Judge Presidents in various provinces.
