Brother arrested attempting to bribe Officer for the release of his drug charged brother

Police have confirmed an arrest of a Nigerian national who attempted to bribe a police officer for the release of his brother who was arrested on drug charges.
Captain Dineo Sekgotodi of the Hawks said that officers were attending a court case on May 8th, 2022 at Volksrust when one of them received a call.
“An investigator reportedly received a phone call regarding an unknown Nigerian male who wanted to meet him to negotiate the release of his brother who was appearing in court for dealing in drugs. The brother was apparently arrested on the 9 December 2021 and has been in custody since.”
“The investigating officer requested to meet with him personally outside the court. During the process he requested for verbal authority to conduct an undercover operation and authority was granted.”
Sekgotodi added that the officer was approached by Mr Nwaebiem Uchena Uzuegbnam and promised gratification of R5000-00 if his brother gets bail.
They then went to a car where they found another Nigerian national and the pair was arrested on spot and charged with corruption after handing over the agreed money.
The accused appeared In court on several occasions. Accused number 2, Ezeokwuosa Benjamin was granted R5000 bail while Nwaebiem Uchenna Uzuegbnam(44) was given 10 direct imprisonment.
The case against Ezeokwuosa Benjamin was postponed to Thursday, 7 September 2023 for separation of trial arrangements.
